The 2014 West Sound Guide Magazine

In preparing this year’s guide, the Kitsap Sun’s research team unearthed a trove of old editions. West Sound Guide’s predecessor, Kitsapland, dates back to at least 1979 — at least, that’s the oldest one we found, and a few former Sun staffers confirmed that we’re in the ballpark for the inaugural edition. So let’s celebrate with a more-or-less 35th anniversary.

In addition to the West Sound Guide’s long-standing tradition of being the place to learn more about who, what and where, this year the Kitsap Sun staff chipped in some personal recommendations. These people, after all, are paid to go crawling around each community to find the stories, not to mention being residents who raise families, play sports, explore and generally express plenty of curiosity.

West Sound Guide to the Outdoors – Winter 2013

The coldest season of the year has started — fortunately we live in Washington.

Yes, it gets gray during our winter, but the mild days and nearby mountains open the outdoors to a range of activities until the flowers bloom again. Whether you’re looking to ski and snowshoe or get wet in Puget Sound, you’ll find a day to do that around here. And West Sound Guide to the Outdoors can help.

This issue has advice on getaways like the New Dungeness Spit Lighthouse, where a special kind of solitude can be had through a “lighthouse keepers” program. There’s advice from couples who RV year-round, and an deeper dive, so to speak, into Hood Canal’s relationship with the beautiful and elusive giant Pacific octopus, which winter scuba divers know well.
